Model 3: Social Infrastructure (IC30)
The TICCS superclass IC30 (Social Infrastructure) describes the assets in this model. For this superclass, we apply ABMs, which rely on the size of the asset and its electricity consumption. For each asset, we use geospatial descriptions from publicly available geographic databases to extract the area in square meters and identify the country where the asset is located. Further, we combine the size of the asset building (in m2) with different CoFs (in kWh/m2) and EFs (in tCO2/MWh) for each subclass. That way, we can estimate the released CO2 per kWh of energy consumed depending on building type, asset size, and country.
We estimate Scope 1 and 2 emissions based on the following equations:
Scope 1 [tCO2e] = area [m^2] x CoF [MWh/m^2] x EF [tCO2/MWh]
Scope 2 [tCO2e] = area [m^2] x CoF [MWh/m^2] x EF [tCO2/MWh]
The model does not estimate Scope 3 emissions as all social infrastructure subclasses are very different and require complex supplementary data.
